This post is created especially for those who have no idea which blogging platform is right for them. But For the time being, this article won’t be covered all popular blogger platforms but wordpress.com and blogger.com. I tried as much as I could for finding the differences between wordpress.com and blogger.com. If you are familiar with other blogging platforms such as Windows Live Spaces,Live Journal, TypePad and so on, you may contribute your thoughts for finding the differences between all free blogging platforms.

Well. Those are the differences that I can think of so far.

If you are not very sure whether you should choose blogger or wordpress.com til now, I’d like to suggest you to try wordpress.com for your blog.

Because ~

  1. If your blog is gowning bigger and bigger, you might want to move to paid hosting. Then, WordPress might be the best way to do that. Because you can download the latest version of wordpress from wordpress.org or wordpress MU with free of charges. Then, you can easily export all of your posts and comments to XML file and import it to your new blogs. So, you won’t miss out anything. Plus, If you have custom domain then it’s more easy for you to move your blog to paid hosting. you won’t lost any of your readers. you won’t need to ask anybody to change the feed of your blog or your site’s url.
  2. Both WordPress MU or WordPress are open source so that you can be a part of development team.

Feel free to let me know if you found something that I missed out or you have suggestion/comment for this post.

UPDATE: Blogger supports widget too. (Thanks Myo Chau Htun and Elaine Vigneault )

UPDATE: 6.blogger blogs tend to be more spam blogs/ splogs than wordpress blogs because of the free search engine traffic, the savvy blackhat SEO guys use blogger blogs. (Thanks to Elaine Vigneault )

Thank you!

  2. >>But I seem to like blogger more coz i think changing templates and stuffs >>seems more easy on it and the it’s more user friendly i think.

Changing templates ( customizing templates) is really good.. but you know there are some sad stories behind this. some people can’t do HTML and CSS things and they are not very happy with defaults theme. ( I have no idea why some people don’t wanna use default theme just like that.. ) So, they took other people’s creation without giving any credit. it become a problem.. another thing is also some people customize their themes on their owned ways but what happen is that their customized theme doesn’t work properly in firefox or other browsers except IE. Since we start a public blog which can be accessed by everybody, we shouldn’t assume that all visitors are gonna use IE only.
anyway, it’s just a thought. buddy.. I believe that blogger is created by very huge company “Google” so that blogger might have a lot of good points too..
Personally, I love both Google and WordPress.

    >>I hate blogger because that bar at the top of the blogs is extremely annoying
    :)

  3. Mike,

Widgets are now available in new blogger beta template. It has drag and drop features and now Google keep adding widget elements in blogger template section such as newsreel and google video bar with AJAX feature. (this is updated news)

  4. The difference between those two is huge. Here’s my personal opinion: if it’s your first blog, go with Blogger. It’s intuitive, simple, easy, FREE and you get automatic traffic without trying. WordPress.com is fine but you don’t get as many free options.

Ultimately though, I believe it doesn’t matter where you start blogging, just start. It takes a while to develop your writing skills and your voice. Once you have a good idea of what you want to blog about and how you want to blog about it and you’re committed, then you can move to a better option. I started in LiveJournal and now I blog with Blogger and my own hosted WordPress.org blog.

My opinion is that wordpress.org (not wordpress.com) is the best final option and blogger.com is the best starter option. CURRENTLY.

Here are the things you might want to fix on your chart:
    1. blogger.com doesn’t make it easy to import or export but there are hacks that allow you to do it.
    2. blogger’s anti-spam devices are captchas, moderated comments, or no comments.
    3. the new blogger layout is almost identical to widgets
    4. blogger blogs are automatically indexed by Google whereas other blogs are not. This means blogger blogs get search engine traffic slightly more easily than other blogs.
    5. blogger blogs don’t handle tagging as well as wordpress blogs
    6. blogger blogs tend to be more spam blogs/ splogs than wordpress blogs (because of the free search engine traffic, the savvy blackhat SEO guys use blogger blogs)

  5. @Elaine

    Thanks a lot.. Elaine.
Yeah. I agreed. WordPress.org is the best one.. im gonna move my blog to wordpress.org ( paid hosting).. i set up one “http://michaelsync.com” but not sure when i gonna move..

    >>1. blogger.com doesn’t make it easy to import or export but there are hacks that allow you to do it.
hacks? why we need a hacks while wp allows people to import or export in very simply way.

    >>blogger’s anti-spam devices are captchas, moderated comments, or no comments.
Yeah. blogger has three options for comments. but I think those are not so powerful as “Akismet” (maybe in my op. ) ya. anyway, we can say that blogger also has anti-spam..

    >>the new blogger layout is almost identical to widgets
initially, they dont have it.. but ya.. they support widgets now..
    I gonna update my list.

    >>4. blogger blogs are automatically indexed by Google whereas other blogs are not. This means blogger blogs get search engine traffic slightly more easily than other blogs.
ya.. cuz blogger is a part of google. :) but wordpress global tagging system works pretty well too ..

    >>blogger blogs don’t handle tagging as well as wordpress blogs
you mean. we can’t have tags in our blog? OR tagging system??

Actually, wordpress have both. they have Global tagging system.. and they have tag generator created by engtech. but it doesn’t synchronize “wp cat” automatically. but user can update manually and put the “tag cloud” in their blogs.

    >>blogger blogs tend to be more spam blogs/ splogs than wordpress blogs
    this is good point..
I will update my list now..
Thanks for visiting my blog and your comment.

    @Myo Kyaw Htun
    Yeah. buddy. I gonna update.

  6. Maybe it’s just me and my super high security settings in Norton, but I switched to wordpress because I often have trouble either logging into blogger or leaving comments on other people’s blogger blogs using my bloggerid.

Still I think wordpress.com is one of the sweetest deals going!

  7. This is a great article. Thanks so much. I find that folks I coach in government settings often have networks that shun, ban and forbid access to blogger. So I teach from wordpress.com. The word BLOG is still a dirty word in some circles.
This was so good that I put it on my bloggingforboomers.com site along with Mr. Bill(smile)
    Keep up the great work!

  8. michael, am planning to setup my first blog & am choosing bet blogger & wordpress.com. i would like earn from my blog thru adsense, affiliates, direct ads or sponsors. i would like to encourage discussions & interactions from my readers. i would also want my posts to be sorted or categorized so that my reader can go direct to a category & read all the recent/previous posts/comments for that topic.as a service to my readers, i would like to put a box where readers can posts anything for sale or items they are looking for, future topics they want featured or help they need without cluttering or going off-topic on my regular posts. will appreciate if you could help me on this.

  9. I use freeblogzone, I’m sick of blogger and wordpress.

FreeBlogZone.com is a new website, but brings many unique features in which both blogger and wordpress do not have.

They have a great support team, and seem to update things very frequently.

  10. I really would like to know because I’ve seen on other sites it has been but on others its saying it will be released July 11th 2008. Also, do you have to activate the iPhone when you get it or can you just use what else is on there like the Safari, Youtube, etc. I do also have Wi-Fi Connection at my home. Please reply. Thank You!

  11. Hey Mike, thanks for all the advice. I really needed to hear this.

You are correct about the switching aspect, but the fact that you can’t place ads on WP, still is an issue. THAT HURTS:)

I have no experience with either, but I am thinking about going to straight for the paid web hosting and PW.org
